Detours…

    We thought we had the summer planned but this past week we have taken a few less exciting yet necessary detours. When moving into a house, it is easy to revel in all the added space. With four bedrooms for two people, we soon began using the “red bedroom” (it is currently painted red) as storage. This summer we acquired an extra guest bed and began converting the red bedroom into a second guest bedroom (believe it or not, we often need two separate sleeping spaces). This involved organizing my seasonal decorations and selling some items on Craigslist.

    This past weekend we tackled a lingering project we lovingly dubbed The Office Closet. For three years we dumped any extra paper work or spare computer cord into one closet. Needless to say, it was a jungle. We took the time to finally take everything out. Some things found different homes…some things were thrown away…all of it was organized.

    Next weekend we hit the road again. Mexico or bust!

      Four years later…

      Today (and this weekend) Jesse and I are celebrating our wedding anniversary. We often talk about our marriage as a journey thus our blog name. This week someone found out about our anniversary and asked, “So, how is marriage?” What a question…with so many answers.

      I simply wanted to take the opportunity to let others know it is not an easy journey, but marriage is worth the commitment and  blessings as well as the sacrifices when you find the right person to journey with. I love you, Jesse!

      Just for fun, here’s a wedding picture of how happy we are at the start of this journey and one testifying to how great it is four years later…

      July 2010

        I lived…

        As many of you know, I had dental surgery on Tuesday, July 13. I have had surgery one time before when I had my impacted wisdom teeth removed. Thankfully, this time the surgery went much better.

        I had a receding gum line on my lower front teeth, so the dentist took skin from the roof of my mouth and grafted it to my lower gum. The procedure requires two stitches and two graft packs (one on my lower gums and one in the roof of my mouth).

        My mom was able to come over to Eagan to help Jesse take care of me. She drove me around, made all of my soft foods (yummy mashed potatoes) and made sure I was following the dentist’s orders. My mouth is still sore, but I am no longer needing the heavy pain medication.

        Still not sure when I can start eating normally again…sigh…good-bye corn-on-the-cob.

          Missing In Action

          You may have been wondering where I have been for the last week. After the whirlwind trip to Indiana, this is what I looked like…

          After the whirlwind last day of school, this is what I look like…

          My co-workers and I were discussing how strange it is to be a teacher. The months of May and June are crazy. Suddenly, after the last day of school, you have nothing to do. It’s almost like a loss. Then I remember all the things I put off doing for the last 9 months and get started on my summer wish list…and I always have time to sit down and look through the information for next’s year’s students and dream of the year ahead.

            Open road tolling…

            This weekend we are again setting out in our trusty Toyota Camry for another adventure. We are headed to Lafayette, IN for my cousin Julie’s wedding. I have the perfect summer dress, shoes I borrowed from my co-worker Teresa, and pretty jewelry. Of course, a picture will follow.

            We are most excited, though, about being able to use our new I-PASS. We travel to Chicago and through the Chicago area frequently because Jesse’s mom lives there and my extended family is in IN. Now the easiest way to go is open road tolling. Every time we make the trip, I wish for an I-PASS, but we never travel during times when the customer service stations are open. After returning from my brother’s graduation, I finally remembered to order an I-PASS. Open road…here we come!

              Congratulations, Little Brother…

              This weekend (like many for Jesse and I) we jumped in the car Friday evening and headed to Chicago. We laughed as we were stopped in a traffic jam entering the city at 11:30 pm. Chicago traffic is crazy!

              The occasion for this visit was celebrating my brother’s graduation from Moody Bible Institute with a bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Studies. Eric joined Jesse with a 5 year degree. 🙂 We had a great time seeing family and enjoying a celebratory meal at Fogo de Chao.

              As you can see, I am a very proud big sister. Congratulations, Eric!

                Grad School

                In the fall of 2008, I began the adventure of a MS in Library Media Education. I have completed 27 credits and have 7 to finish this summer and coming fall.

                When taking this on, I never realized how difficult and time-consuming it would be to work full-time and take classes “full-time”. This week I have a break before I start my next class on Monday. I have managed to read magazines, finish an entire book (just for fun), do laundry, make dinner, and watch tv. I am looking forward to the days when I can come home in the evenings and ONLY have those things to do. 🙂

                Alas, my thesis awaits.

                  Kitchen Re-Model

                  A large dining room table has been my dream since Jesse and I began entertaining. I always said I wanted to be able to seat 12 even though we have a smaller combined kitchen and dining area. This spring Jesse helped me invest in this dream. Not only did we buy a beautiful kitchen table, we also painted the kitchen, put in new light fixtures, bought a wall painting, and changed the cabinet hardware…all in one weekend.  I wanted a new microwave, but we ran out of money. 🙂

                    Starting a Blog

                    Andrea and I have had the idea to start a blog for awhile now, but it took until a few weeks ago when we were on a vacation down to South Carolina to decide that we were going to make it happen. It was at that time that Andrea had the idea for the name “Sutherland Road” which encapsulates our married adventures together.

                    We’re planning to talk about our crazy adventures that we have together on our roadtrips, our camping adventures, and in the daily events of life. We’re not really sure anyone is interested in hearing about all of that, but that never stopped anyone from blogging before, has it?

                    We’re both perfectionists in one way or another, so I think blogging will be hard for us, but we’re going to give it a go. If you’ve got a comment, please leave it, as I’m sure it would encourage us a lot! Thanks!

                      Living My Faith Transparently

                      I was reading in Psalms this morning and came across Psalm 40:8-10,

                      I desire to do your will, O my God;
                      your law is within my heart.”

                      I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
                      I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD.

                      I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
                      I speak of your faithfulness and salvation.
                      I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly.

                      The Lord used it to get me thinking about living my faith more transparently. David didn’t hide his faith. He lived it out by speaking of God’s faithfulness and salvation.

                      Recently at work one of our clients from the Salvation Army stopped by to tell us a story about how a commercial that we had helped to create had been used by God to bring a man who had been addicted to drugs out of his sin and into repentance and Jesus’ grace. Wow! I couldn’t help but smile as she excitedly told myself and my coworkers this not really knowing or caring what any of us believed. Her faith was attractive.

                      For another example, I’ve been impressed with following Pastor Mark Driscoll on Twitter. I love the way he represents his life and faith through a mere 140 characters. He tells about how proud he is of his kids, how he’s encouraged in his faith, and motivates people to serve others.

                      That’s what I desire in my life. Living out my faith in real, bold, attractive manner. I know its not exactly a huge revelation or new information, but I feel like it’s what God is teaching me right now. Hopefully I’ll be able to follow others examples as I seek to model this in my life. Do you have any examples of people living their faith out transparently, please share!
