We Made It!

On Saturday, December 11, I graduated with my Master of Science degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato. I must take the opportunity to thank my supportive and loving husband for helping me accomplish this goal. He willingly helped pay for my graduate degree, he lovingly encouraged me through hours of homework and projects, and he thoughtlessly served me by taking care of the details of our life while I was so busy. This past week we were remembering that I have been working on grad school for the past two and a half years. We could not even remember what life was like before I had classes to complete. We made it!

To some of you, December 11th has another significance. It is the date of one of the Top 10 snowfalls in the Twin Cities. I started hearing about the blizzard on Thursday night. My mom, dad, brother, and sister-in-law were all planning to come to Minnesota for graduation celebrations. I called my mom to warn her about the snow.

Once everyone arrived on Friday night, we found this notice from Mankato State. We looked into getting a hotel for the night but decided to sleep in our comfortable beds and leave at 6:30 am Saturday morning in hopes of making it to campus for the Department of Education’s hooding ceremony at 9 am. My dad and Jesse awoke and shoveled the first 7 inches of snow. All six of us piled into one car and set off. On the drive to Mankato (81 miles), we were met with unplowed highways and blowing snow. At 9:10 am we ran into the Performing Arts Center slipping and sliding through the parking lot on the ice beneath the snow. My family sat down and I ran onto the stage for my hooding. We made it!

After the ceremony an administrative assistant helped us map a route to the graduation ceremony through the academic buildings of campus, but we had to cross one street to find the tunnels. With our first steps out of the building, we were slipping, sliding and falling on the ice. We turned a corner up to the building, and the wind and snow almost blew us over. Laughing and joking, we found the Taylor Center and attended the ceremony. We made it!

After the ceremony, we all piled back into the car for the drive home. Driving through the streets of Mankato were treacherous, and we left behind cars  and trucks spinning their wheels. Once on the highway, we traveled at a slow 30 miles per hour. We caught up with a caravan of cars and attempted to travel with them. My dad had Jesse and I in the front seat as spotters. Every minute he asked, “Where am I?” Based on the few pieces of the road we could see we would answer left lane or right lane. The snow continued and the wind picked up. Many times my dad would ask, “Where am I?” and Jesse and I didn’t even have an answer. We couldn’t see the road, we couldn’t see the caravan of cars, we couldn’t see anything.

I did see a sign for a hotel 2 miles ahead. We saw the hotel but saw no way to get to the hotel. We decided to take the next exit. Getting off on the exit, our car got stuck in the snow. We could not even see roads to turn on to head in the direction of the hotel. We stopped in a turn lane to decide what to do. An angel in the form of a tow truck pulled up alongside us. We shouted AmericInn out the window. He replied, “Follow me”. He lead us through “streets” a foot deep in snow but we continued on knowing if we got stuck he could pull us out. With gale force winds blowing us down, we ran from the parking lot into the hotel. We made it!

I explained that we had six people. A woman at the desk let me know there were two king bed rooms available. The woman next to her was on the phone explaining that they had two rooms available. The person helping me looked at me and asked, “Do you want the rooms?” I replied yes and the person on the phone was out of luck. We got the last two rooms in the hotel. Later my dad asked, “How much did I end up paying for these rooms?”

We went to our rooms and collapsed for a rest. Thankfully, the hotel had a family restaurant across the parking lot. We spent the evening enjoying dinner and watching the movie The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. We slept boys in one room, girls in the other.

This morning we set out for Eagan only to find more unplowed roads and a driveway covered with 4 foot drifts. The boys shoveled a path and we were home. The snow storm total in the area where we were was 20.5 inches. We made it!

Our adventure and detours this weekend add another story to our crazy family memories. Thank you mom and dad for your dedication and encouragement. Thank you Eric and Alaina for your support and sacrifice. I love you! We made it!

      Visitors

Jesse and I are notorious for traveling on the weekends. We love to visit our families and friends even when they live far away. This fall we are experiencing a change of pace. We are staying home and everyone is coming to visit US!

It began last weekend when Larry & Cyndee came from Chicago to see the Sutherland family. It was a beautiful Saturday, so we enjoyed biking and playing outside.

This past weekend my parents came for a visit. Because of MEA, I had Thursday and Friday off of school. My parents came Wednesday night from Neenah, and we enjoyed a long 4-day weekend. The weather was again beautiful, so we hiked the Minnihaha Falls area as well as saw the movie Secretariat and did some shopping. Jesse and my dad even fixed the brakes in one of our cars.

Next weekend my brother and sister-in-law were going to visit, but my brother ended up having to work in Canada for the next three weeks. We are going to reschedule for December.

In the beginning of November our good friends Scott and Melissa from Neenah are visiting our house for the first time. They have been in Florida for the last three years, so they haven’t been able to see our home.

The next weekend Larry and Cyndee will return to celebrate Aubrie’s (our niece) 3rd birthday.

We don’t mind driving, but we are certainly enjoying staying home. If only my house would clean itself…and wash all of the sheets and towels!

        Babyland

Between the years of 2006 and 2008, we attended MANY weddings. In the last few weeks, we have gone from being friends with young married couples to being friends with young families.

Five weeks ago my friend Amanda and her husband had their first baby Selah. We enjoyed a baby shower with them on Saturday. A few weeks ago my grandparents enjoyed the birth of their first great-grandchild born to Michael and and my cousin Kristi. Many friends of ours have called in recent weeks with exciting news…

As excited as we are, it is also a bit sad for Jesse & I. Change is always hard, and we know that our friendships with some of our best friends will soon be changing. We also are feeling a bit left behind. We could certainly do something about that, but we aren’t quite ready.

The conversation used to go, “What would you think about a baby?”

        “No way!”

Now the conversation is evolving to, “Let’s have a baby…sooner than later.”

In the meantime one of the funnest things about our friends having babies is more trips to Target…gift registries here we come!

          Full, Fall Weekend

Friday we traveled to Neenah for a Lashbrook Family Weekend. It’s never a visit home without doing it all! The only thing missing was my dad as he was traveling on business.

Saturday morning we slept in (this might be a first, but my mom is finally understanding my first life rule: do nothing before 8 am on a Saturday)! My mom made a delicious brunch of quiche, baked oatmeal, and a fruit medley. Then we headed to Oshkosh to visit my niece and nephew birds.

          My Mom and Sookie

          From there we headed to…

The Little Farmer is a fun place to do fall things like take a hay ride, pick apples, and eat caramel apples.

We had many butt shots of Eric in the apple trees, but I decided to spare him some embarrassment.

The main reason for our visit was celebrating Alaina’s birthday. We ended the evening on Saturday with a steak dinner, fun games, and a dirty bathtub chocolate cake (a creative cake for the cake maker).

Sunday before we left we did get to pick my dad up at the airport. Thanks mom, dad, Eric, and Alaina for a great weekend!

            Family

Jesse and I are both blessed to have amazing families.

Jesse’s family is unique in that it is a blended family of the Sutherlands and the Smiths. This past weekend we had the opportunity to spend time with the whole family (12 adults and 13 children) at Larry & Cyndee’s UpNorth house. It was a fun weekend with beautiful weather but also bittersweet. Jesse’s stepbrother Rick and his family are leaving this week for Africa. They will be there two years serving at an orphanage called Oasis for Orphans. Saying good-bye was sad but also exciting as they are now setting out on a new adventure.

              Golden Birthday

Tomorrow is my golden birthday (I turn 27 on August 27th). I have been looking forward to this birthday since my dad’s golden birthday when he turned 27 on January 27th 19 years ago. My mom threw a big surprise party for him, and my brother and I had so much fun being in on the surprise.

Because we are spending the weekend with the Smiths UpNorth, Jesse and I celebrated tonight. It all began with a gift scavenger hunt. Jesse left me three clues around the house. Each clue eventually held the code to a padlock. Inside was my very own MACBOOK PRO! Many of you remember when Jesse got his MacBook Pro last year. He had saved up for it forever and was so excited. Well, I have been jealous ever since.

Jesse together with his parents and my parents bought me a laptop as a joint birthday/grad school graduation gift. I’m using it to complete this post. The best part is that Jesse completely surprised me; I had absolutely no idea for probably the first time in our marriage (I’m pretty observant and always catch some kind of hint or clue from Jesse). After starting the set-up on my new computer, we enjoyed dinner together at The Melting Pot. I love birthdays…

I am heading back to school next week but will try to post about Mexico soon. Let me preview it with it was fabulous and, of course, I puked on myself…

                Kubb Cup

Last weekend, we went camping with Carl and Kristi Hagen and Noah and Katie Haas (great friends of ours from Eau Claire). This is an annual camping trip, and we love the chance to reconnect every summer.

                One Big Happy Family

Noah loves lawn games and introduced us this year to Kubb. To make it a little competitive, we decided to play boys versus girls.

                Ladies Warming Up

Game One: Quick and easy victory for the girls. One of the boys accidentally knocked over the King. Whoops!

Game Two: Slow defeat for the girls. The boys easily knocked down all of our Kubbs (or wooden blocks).

                Jesse's Game Face

Game Three: The girls began the game with a few bold offensive moves, but the boys quickly created many obstacles. With a few missed opportunities, the girls began a quick comeback to win the championship 2 games to 1.

                We are the Champions!

The Good Times and the Sad Times

After our anniversary trip to The Creamery, Jesse and I stopped in Eau Claire for the 25-year Navigator reunion. The Navs are very important to Jesse and I as it is the Christian organization where we met one another as well as many of our dear college friends.

At the reunion we had the opportunity to connect with many of those friends. Three of Jesse’s former roommates were in attendance and four of Andrea’s. It was great to gather and remember all the great times we had when we were all college students (including dinner at Mancino’s).

This week, though, we are having to say good-bye to Ross & Megan. We have lived together in the Twin Cities for the past four years. Megan and I went through finding jobs together. Ross and Jesse introduced a friend to Christ together, and we have all watched many episodes of Survivor together. We will be at a loss without these amazing friends close but are excited for the next leg of their own journey.

                    Home

No matter how long I live in Minnesota, I still talk about going home when we travel to Neenah, WI. This past weekend we visited my family in my home town. Our first stop was Scott & Melissa Matson’s new house in Neenah. They moved back after being in Florida for 3 years. We are so excited to have them closer to home.

On Saturday we visited Eric & Alaina’s garden plot. I was very jealous of the huge space they have to grow vegetables, but, alas, I live in the suburbs.

                    Eric and Turnips

Today is Eric’s birthday (happy birthday, brother), but we were able to celebrate last week at our family’s favorite restaurant. My dad claims we were celebrating the rest of the birthdays for the year (lucky for him and my mom who got their own celebrations in January and May while all of us kids have birthdays in the second half of the year). Hopefully, he won’t stick to it.

                    Texas Roadhouse

Sadly, we never have time to visit all of our favorite places and people when we are in town, but that is why we will visit again soon!

                      2,332 Miles…At Least

This past weekend we did something that we haven’t done very often. We visited a place neither of us has been to. Growing up, my family did a lot of traveling, so Jesse always teases me about all the places I have already been. Well, I had never been to Philadelphia, PA.

Jesse’s cousin, Ty, married Emily (now his cousin-in-law) on Sunday, July 4th. On Thursday evening we drove to Chicago to meet Larry & Cyndee (Jesse’s parents). On Friday we drove 13 hours to Willow Grove, PA. Saturday  morning we saw the sights of Philadelphia including the Liberty Bell, Liberty Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both signed), the LOVE statue, and the Reading Terminal for a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. The rehearsal dinner thrown by Jesse’s aunt Connie (Cyndee’s sister) and uncle Greg was Saturday night. Sunday was the wedding as well as a stop for some famous water ice. We drove back to Chicago on Monday and back to Eagan on Tueaday. Are you tired yet? We were! Jesse’s mom said her motto was, “Sleep when you get home!”

                      I think I’m going to go take a nap…
